Dear Friends and Trail Enthusiasts, I t is with great pleasure that we share the 2023 Annual Report for Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, Inc. As we look back on the year, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support and commitment from our dedicated communi- ty of partners and stakeholders. As we take the next steps forward on this project, we reflect on the long road that has led us to this point. The early discussions in 2006 when the Fjord Trail concept was new; the many, many voices who have added their wisdom and creativity to crafting the plan for nearly twenty years; the partnership of agen- cies, municipalities, nonprofits, and local resi- dents who continue to support the project and improve it with their input; and the already accomplished elements that illustrate the incredible potential of the Fjord Trail plan. The Nimham Trail and Breakneck Upper Overlook projects have already made a significant impact on hiker safety and visitor management, and they have done so through thoughtful, subtle design that leaves the ecology of the surrounding landscape in better condition than before. Since the Master Plan was first drafted in 2014, a sensitive, considered approach to trail design has been a key goal of the project. In 2018, the current Fjord Trail design team was challenged to reconnect people of all abilities with the inspiring power of the Hudson High- lands landscape and heal that landscape in the process. They have answered with a trail design that is as functional as it is beautiful. This internationally recognized team of architects and engineers is bringing their combined experience and talent to create a trail that everyone can be proud of. In fact, Fjord Trail design is already receiv- ing recognition, having won the Excellence in Design Award from the New York City Public Design Commission for the Breakneck Bridge. The iterative process that results in such a high standard is burnished through the regular input of HHFT’s esteemed Design Council, Steering Committee, and the ongoing feedback of interested and involved residents. On the following pages, you will find the stories of some of these local residents as they envision the Fjord Trail – for themselves, their families, friends, communities, and the greater region. We also report with pride on some of our major project milestones from 2023. As we navigate the path ahead, we are energized by the support and guidance of so many who believe in this project and the talent and tenacity of the professional team designing and building the trail with grace, purpose, and resilience. To all who have lent their hands, hearts, and spirits to this journey, we extend our deepest gratitude. The Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail is not merely an organization or a project; it is a promise to future generations of our enduring connection to nature and to each other, and our commitment to achieve balance between creating welcoming access to open space and conserving our precious natural resources. With heartfelt gratitude, “ As we navigate the path ahead, we are energized by the support and guidance of so many who believe in this project and the talent and tenacity of the professional team who are designing and building the trail with grace, purpose, and resilience.” Chris Davis Board Chair Amy Kacala Executive Director
